In Dongara visit Russ Cottage, built in the late 1860s, it was restored by the Irwin District Historical Society. It is typical of a yeoman’s cottage of the time. A visit to the Old Police Station, which is now the Irwin District Museum, is a must. Here you can learn all about the original pioneers, their unbelievable hardships and triumphs. The building is also steeped in history, built in 1870, it served as a police station, courthouse and gaol.
The Priory Lodge is another magnificent building in Dongara. Built in 1881 and then converted into The St Dominic's Priory by the Dominican Sisters, it has now been lovingly restored into a bar, restaurant and accommodation, all with period furniture.
On the first Saturday of the month, the Priory Lodge holds their Monthly Markets. Set in the Priory gardens, locals sell their wares with plenty of arts and crafts.
From the Fisherman's Lookout there is a panoramic view of Port Denison and the fishing boat harbour, one of the largest in the state, which offers fishers plenty of sport with an abundance of tailor, snapper, whiting, dhufish and rock lobster in season.
During spring Dongara and Port Denison are ideal as a base from which to tour the magnificent wildflower country in the surrounding area.
A variety of accommodation is available, ranging from full service motels, holiday flats, caravan parks, campers parks and nearby farm stays.
